Victorian festivities at Lydiard House

The Magic of Christmas Past

18 December 2008

Experience a traditional Victorian Christmas at Lydiard House – a special festive event which promises fun for all the family and runs until Tuesday, 23 December. The elegant state rooms can be seen decked out in festive finery including greenery, traditional decorations and 3 real Christmas trees, including an impressive 12 foot decorated tree in the main hall.

On display for the first time are two small Christmas cards, sent in the early 20th Century by the 6th Viscount Bolingbroke. Central to most people’s celebrations is the Christmas dinner and at Lydiard House the Dining Room table is set with a lavish dinner featuring a double rib of roast beef, vegetables – typical of a late Victorian Christmas dinner and based on old menus belonging to the Bolingbroke family, and on dinners eaten by other Victorian aristocrats.

Taking pride of place in the dining room is another tradition passed down to us by the Victorians – the plum pudding!
