SUPPORTING PEOPLE STRATEGY

This strategy describes the Supporting People Programme and what it is trying to achieve for the vulnerable people of Swindon.  Swindon Borough Council funds the programme with grants based on funding levels awarded from Central Government.

  • It offers vulnerable people the opportunity to improve their quality of life by providing a stable environment, which enables greater independence
  • It aims to deliver high quality and strategically planned housing-related services, which are cost effective and reliable, and complement existing care services.
  • The future planning and development of services is to be needs led

Supporting People is a working partnership of Social Services, Housing, Probation and Health together with Providers, Carers and Users of Services and other support agencies.

Housing Related Services help people to help themselves by:

  • Assisting those who feel excluded or who are threatened with homelessness, or people who are young or inexperienced and who need support in order to run a home, or people who have difficulty setting up a home because of underlying problems
  • Housing Related Services help elderly or disabled people with debilitating problems that cause them to have restricted choices in where they live and who see residential care as their only option or people who are hospitalised for too long because there is no network of support to help them return back home
  • Housing Related Services provided to people who need help to achieve a stable home life because of a history of exclusion due to offending or other social problems and external pressures

Contact the Swindon Supporting People to find out more or to comment on the strategy.  The next step is to develop an annual plan and a Five Year Strategy, which will identify the needs for type of service and inform where funds should be channelled in future, right up to year 2009.

What kind of housing related services do you think are needed for people in Swindon?  What support will help vulnerable people who want to stay independent wherever they live?  What will help excluded vulnerable people attain a home and stability?
