TRANSPORT PLAN

What is a local transport plan?

The Local Transport Plan (LTP) is a five-year strategy must be produced by every local authority with a statutory responsibility for transport.  It sets out the transport objectives which the council wants to achieve over the five year period and the types of schemes which the council would like to implement.

These schemes will include measures to assist walking, cycling and public transport use, new street lights, crossings, cycle routes, bus stops or road alterations and road and bridge maintenance.  The Local Transport Plan also sets out the targets by which the council will be monitoring and reporting its progress each year.  Importantly, the Local Transport Plan sets out how much money will be needed to undertake the proposed work, and makes a bid for government funding.

The Local Transport Plan process is the result of the Government's ten year plan for transport.  This is the Government's strategy for delivering a modern, safe, reliable transport system is explained in this ten-year plan which sets out a £180 billion investment programme, covering all forms of land transport.
